Proudly supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families since 1954.

In 1954, Ike and Shirley Hamilton had many fears- fears shared among other parents who also had children with developmental disabilities. One evening, a radio program advertisement shared information about an association that could help families begin the process of educating the community about their children. The Hamilton Family quickly started a chapter with the support of other courageous families in similar circumstances. This began the long journey of children, no longer being hidden from the community and institutional placement no longer being viewed as the best option.

What began as a small movement has grown into a vital resource for individuals with developmental disabilities. This was achieved thanks to the dedication of volunteers, parents, media, and donors who joined this journey from the beginning.

ARCO’s mission remains the same today as it has for over seventy years—to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families to have quality lives through information, support, and opportunity. With each passing year, we continue to walk this path, building on the vision set forth by the Hamilton family. But our journey is far from over. We invite you to join us as we work together to ensure that every individual has a life of independence and contributes to the community around them. Yes, I would like to be part of the journey! ORGANIZATION AFFILIATES

ARCO is honored to be both a United Way of Northeast Louisiana partner agency and a chapter of the Arc of Louisiana, proudly known as the Arc of Ouachita. As a United Way member since 1956, ARCO has been deeply rooted in supporting local needs and initiatives for individuals with developmental disabilities. In recent years, our affiliation with the Arc of Louisiana has allowed us to join a collective voice with other state chapters, providing us with a strength-in-numbers approach to educating leaders throughout the state.

Along this journey, we must always embrace new ideas for people with developmental disabilities. We are particularly proud of our partnership with the University of Louisiana Monroe and their new ACES Program. ULM’s Academics, Career, Engagement, and Support (ACES) program is a comprehensive transition and postsecondary education experience for young adults with intellectual disabilities, primarily autism. ARCO is excited to help these students explore the business community and assist them with making future employment opportunities successful. Together, we are shaping the next generation of skilled employees!
